E-Mail: CJohnson ArtistCherylJohnson.com	``		This is a write up about the school presentation by one of the Stevens Brook teachers. Local Author/Illustrator, Cheryl Johnson, Visits SBES Stevens Brook Elementary School had the pleasure of a visit from a local Bridgton author/illustrator, Cheryl Johnson on “Read Across America Day”. Cheryl is the author and illustrator of Mish the Mushroom Man, Mish’s Winter Celebration, Sidley’s Story, as well as other children’s books. She has lived in Bridgton for twenty-nine years. She presented her work and read her stories to two groups of students: kindergarten and 1st grade, followed by 2nd and 3rd grade. The students were an excellent audience and enjoyed her read aloud of Mish the Mushroom Man. They were fascinated to learn about how she drew the pictures for her books. Cheryl began her career as an artist drawing in magic marker or painting in acrylic paint. More recently, she has learned the technique of painting with a digital stylus to get the same vibrant, colorful effect. Her illustrations are bold and detailed. Her portrayal of Mish the Mushroom Man and his friends are fanciful, fantastic and full of life. The kids were excited to hear about the illustrating process; the multiple steps involved in creating her fanciful characters. She showed the steps from beginning to end, in painting two exotic mermaids. That took a total of ten hours! Cheryl encouraged the students to try their own hand at creating a book. In fact Cheryl, who grew up in Gorham, Maine, began drawing at a very young age. She liked using her imagination, and was quoted as saying that, “It gives you a lot of power.” She insisted that “everybody has a story to tell”, and “everybody has a story in them.” She ended her program by taking questions from the children. Many students were excited to share with her, that they were working on their own books. The author/illustrator agreed with them that it was really fun! In fact, she considers her own work, to be play. The children of Stevens Brook Elementary, were very fortunate to share in the talents of Cheryl Johnson, making Monday, March 3rd a very memorable “Read Across America Day” indeed! Lucy Saunders-Kish
